Polio Vaccination Photo Gallery — Campaigns and Frontline Workers in Pakistan

The photographic record of Pakistan's polio programme documents something that statistics cannot: what it actually takes to reach 45 million children in a week, in a country that spans mega-cities, high mountain valleys, desert districts and a long, busy international border.

What the images show

• House-to-house vaccination. The core activity of every campaign — two-person teams moving street by street with a cool box, a tally sheet and a finger marker.
• Transit point teams. Vaccinators stationed at border crossings, bus terminals, railway stations and highway checkpoints, reaching children who are on the move rather than at home. Around 500 of these permanent transit points operate nationwide.
• Cold chain. Vaccine carriers, ice packs and the logistics that keep oral polio vaccine viable from the national store to a village in mid-summer. A broken cold chain means drops that do nothing.
• Female frontline workers. A large share of the workforce is female, because in many households only a woman can enter and speak to the mother. Much of the campaign's success rests on that access.
• Community engagement. Meetings with elders, religious scholars and teachers — the conversations that happen long before a team knocks on a door in a community where refusals have been common.
• Health camps. Integrated services delivered alongside polio drops: routine immunisation, maternal health, nutrition screening.

Why the visual record matters

Polio eradication is usually discussed through numbers — cases, coverage percentages, environmental samples. The photographs restore the part those numbers abstract away: the terrain teams cross, the weather they work in, the doors they are turned away from, and the fact that the entire programme ultimately comes down to one worker persuading one parent.

It is also a record of risk. Frontline polio workers in Pakistan have been attacked and killed doing this job, and security escorts appear in the imagery from high-risk districts for that reason.
