Why periodic reporting matters here

Polio eradication moves slowly and reverses quickly. Pakistan's case record — 8 cases in 2017, 147 in 2019, 1 in 2021, 74 in 2024, 31 in 2025 — shows that the difference between a good year and a bad one is usually decided several months earlier, in whether campaign quality held in a small number of districts.

Periodic reporting is how that becomes visible while it can still be acted on, rather than in an annual review after the fact.

The signal to watch

Environmental surveillance. Because most poliovirus infections cause no symptoms, sewage sampling detects circulation weeks before any child is paralysed. A newsletter showing positives spreading to new sites is a more serious document than one reporting an additional case in a district that was already known to be infected.
