New Case in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Raises 2025 Tally to 14

The National Emergency Operations Centre confirmed a further wild poliovirus case in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, taking Pakistan's 2025 tally to 14.

Mid-year, before the peak

Fourteen cases by mid-year was a meaningful number because of where it sat in the seasonal curve. Poliovirus transmission in Pakistan builds through the second half of the year — so a mid-year total is not a halfway point, it is a starting position for the high season.

2025 closed at 31 cases. The trajectory from 14 was roughly what the seasonal pattern implied.

The concentration in KP

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa's southern districts have accounted for a disproportionate share of Pakistan's cases across recent years. The reason the programme gives is consistent and specific: security-related access constraints prevent campaigns from running in certain union councils, sometimes across consecutive rounds, leaving children who have missed several consecutive opportunities to be vaccinated.

By September 2026, three of Pakistan's four cases for that year came from the Bannu division alone.

Why "the threat grows" is not rhetoric

Each additional case in the same corridor indicates that the transmission chain there has not been broken, only suppressed. When a chain survives the low season, it starts the high season with a head start — and every month it persists, more children are born into the susceptible pool.

The response

Emergency vaccination around each case, intensified sub-national rounds in the affected corridor, expanded transit point vaccination for mobile families, and continued escalation of access constraints to the political level where they can be addressed.
